We have run a project of building 5 wells in the Central River area, The Gambia. This supplied water to around 700 inhabitants, which use it for personal hygiene, human and animal consumption, and for the irrigation of the crops that were built later.
The wells are been manually dug by the men of the village, with the help of a trained engineer, and the supervision of Javier Galindo (Key collaborator in the area).
The aim was to help to improve the quality of life in villages that have shortage of water and food. This lack leads to dehydration and illness among adults and children, who must walk long distances under a burning sun to collect water and to go to school every day.
By building wells, we supply water to the population and irrigation to the fields. This means that food is more readily available for the villagers, improving their quality of life and reducing diseases.
